Renewing Your Nevada CCW: Frequently Asked Questions
Obtaining your concealed firearm permit in Nevada is a straightforward process, but the permit doesn’t last forever. You have to periodically renew it. The good news is that a renewal is relatively simple. However, if it’s your first renewal period, you probably have lots of questions.
Here’s everything you need to know about the Nevada CCW renewal process.
When Am I Able To Renew My Nevada CCW?
The LVMPD recommends starting your renewal process at least 120 days before your permit expires. If your permit has already expired when you renew, you’ll have to pay a $15 late fee. However, the good news is that you have up to 364 days after your CCW expires to renew it.
Still, experts, including many CCW instructors, recommend starting at least six months before expiration. That’s because it can take up to three months for the county sheriff’s office to process your application. Starting early ensures your new permit arrives before the old one expires, avoiding any lapse in legal coverage.
Check your expiration date now. If you’re within six months of that date, it’s time to book your renewal class and get your paperwork ready. You don’t want to wait until the last minute and find yourself scrambling to get all of your paperwork turned in.
Remember, you can also take your renewal class within 12 months of your renewal application date. Planning ahead can help save you a lot of headaches.
How Much Does It Cost To Renew My Nevada CCW?
Renewing your Nevada CCW permit is cheaper than getting your initial concealed carry license.
Here’s a quick breakdown of costs:
- Renewal application fee: $25
- FBI background check fee: $39
- Late renewal application fee: $40
This means the total cost to renew your Nevada CCW is $64, not including any card processing fees, as long as you renew before your current permit expires. If you are filing for a late renewal, the total cost is $79, with that $15 late fee included.
Remember, you’ll also have to take your renewal class. The class cost will vary by range and location. For example, you might expect it to cost around $85 for a four-hour CCW permit renewal.
What Is the Process To Renew My Nevada CCW?
The Nevada CCW renewal process is straightforward. Here’s what you need to do.
Take an Approved Renewal Class
The 4-hour refresh course ensures you’re up to date on Nevada law. You’ll also get some range time and review safe handling procedures. The instructors will cover drawing from different positions, lessons on awareness, and how to develop a defensive mindset.
You’ll also perform the required range qualification. To complete that, you’ll need your handgun and 30 rounds of ammunition.
Submit Your Application
Complete the renewal form provided by your local sheriff’s office. If you live in Clark County, you will have to submit your renewal form to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
Provide Documentation
You will have to provide your current CCW permit, driver’s license, and renewal class certificate. You will also have to complete a fingerprint/background check.
Wait
Most renewals are approved within 90 days. You’ll be notified when your new permit is ready for pickup. If, for some reason, your permit renewal application is denied, you will receive notice and an explanation. You can appeal the decision, but there are certain automatic disqualifiers.
Can I Renew My CCW Online?
At this time, some jurisdictions allow online renewal. For example, the LVMPD accepts new and renewal forms online. However, you will still have to complete your renewal class in person, as it requires a live-fire component.
Check the website to your county sheriff’s office to find out whether they have an online application portal or if they require you to complete the forms in person. The online route is more convenient, but if you have to go in person, make sure you bring all required documents so that you can avoid repeat trips.
Where Can I Take My Renewal Class?
CCW renewal classes are offered in many locations around the state. Each will have its own schedule, cost, and class specifics, so make sure you ask about those before signing up.
As an example, if you are in Clark County, you can take your renewal course at The Range 702. We are one of Nevada’s top training facilities. Our renewal course covers the following:
- Firearm safety.
- Legal implications of possessing, transporting, and using your firearm.
- General shooting and handling skills.
- Nevada and federal firearms law.
- Practical exercises to draw from multiple positions.
- Lessons on adopting a defensive mindset and awareness.
You will also perform a range qualification, which is required by Nevada state law. You will need to bring the following to check in for your class:
- An email confirmation.
- Your handgun.
- 30 rounds of ammunition.
- The card you used to pay for your class.
- A valid government-issued ID.
- Eye and ear protection.
Our class lasts from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and is offered several days a week.
Do I Need To Retake the Shooting Qualification for My Nevada CCW Renewal?
Yes. All CCW renewals in Nevada require a live-fire qualification to demonstrate continued firearm proficiency. During your renewal class, you’ll shoot the same course of fire used in the original application process. However, the overall class is half the length.
You’ll also brush up on safe handling, the basics of marksmanship, and drawing from different positions. The renewal course is simply meant to be a refresher. You should practice on your own throughout each year so that you maintain basic safety and marksmanship skills.
What Happens if I Move to a Different Nevada County Before Renewal?
If you move within Nevada, you’ll renew your CCW with the sheriff’s office in your new county of residence. Bring proof of your new address, such as your driver’s license, when submitting your renewal packet.
Your training certificate remains valid statewide, so you can take your renewal class anywhere in the state. It will be good for up to 12 months from your application date. However, processing times and fees may differ slightly by county. Therefore, it’s best to start early.
Can I Renew My Nevada CCW if I’ve Changed My Name or Address?
Yes, but you’ll need to update your personal information before or during the renewal process. If you’ve legally changed your name (due to marriage, divorce, etc.), bring certified documentation, such as a marriage certificate or court order, along with your renewal packet.
If you are updating your address, simply provide a utility bill or other piece of mail with your new address.
How Long Does It Take To Get My New Permit?
Processing times vary by county, but you should expect to receive your new permit 60 to 90 days after you submit all of your renewal documents and pay your fees. If you renew early, your new permit will take effect as soon as it is issued. You’ll receive a notification by email when your new card is ready.
If you wait until too close to the deadline, your new permit may not be approved until after your old one expires. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to legally carry a concealed firearm in Nevada until your new CCW license is ready.
Is It Possible To Renew My Permit After It’s Expired?
Yes, you have up to 364 days after your permit expires to renew it. If your CCW has been expired for an entire year, you’ll need to retake the initial CCW permit class. That means you’ll have to reapply as a new applicant.
If your permit has already expired and the one-year period has not elapsed, you can still take the standard four-hour renewal class and pay the cheaper fees. You’ll also have to pay the $15 late fee, but that’s still lower than the new applicant fees.
Can I Carry Concealed if My Permit Is Expired, but I’ve Submitted My Renewal?
No. Once your permit expires, you must wait for your new permit to be issued before you can carry concealed again. Even if your renewal is pending and you know you aren’t subject to any of the disqualification criteria, carrying without an active permit is considered unlawful concealed carry, which can lead to criminal charges.
With that in mind, make sure you pay close attention to the expiration date on your permit. Set a reminder for yourself so you can start your renewal process early. Don’t wait until the last minute, as doing so could risk a “lame duck” period where your new CCW license is pending but your old permit has expired.
What Do I Do if My Renewal Is Denied?
If your renewal is denied, the sheriff’s office must provide a written notice explaining the reason.
You can then:
- Request an appeal in writing within 30 days.
- Submit additional documentation or proof of eligibility.
- Consult an attorney experienced in firearms law, if necessary.
Common reasons for denial include administrative errors and outdated background information. If you have a disqualifying conviction that includes a time limit (i.e., no convictions involving force for the previous three years), you’ll have to wait until enough time has elapsed.
What Would Disqualify Me From Renewing My Nevada CCW Permit?
NRS 202.3657 outlines disqualifiers that would prevent you from renewing your Nevada CCW permit.
You would be automatically disqualified from renewing your CCW license if you have been convicted of any stalking or domestic violence charges, any crime involving the use of force or the threat of force in the previous three years (includes misdemeanors), any DUI (alcohol or other substances) in the past five years, or any felony.
Other disqualifications include:
- You have a warrant for your arrest (includes bench warrants for unpaid traffic tickets).
- You are on parole or probation for any conviction.
- You have received a dishonorable discharge from the United States military.
- You are unlawfully in the U.S.
- A judge has declared you mentally incompetent.
- You are under a protection or restraining order.
- You have been involuntarily admitted to an inpatient mental health treatment facility in the previous five years.
- You are prohibited by federal or state law from possessing a firearm.
- You make any false statements on your renewal application.
For a full list of disqualifications, see Nevada Revised Statutes 202.3657 and your county sheriff’s office guidelines.
