Shooting Range FAQ: Answers to Common Shooting Range Questions

Visiting a shooting range in Las Vegas can be an exciting and safe way to experience firearms, whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned shooter. But it’s normal to have questions before you arrive. Take a closer look at these common questions guests ask us at The Range 702.

Can a Felon Go to a Shooting Range?

No, according to NRS 202.360, a convicted felon is not allowed to possess a firearm. So while a felon could technically go to a shooting range, they could not use any of the firearms. Others who are prohibited from possessing firearms under NRS 202.360 include:

  • Those who have been convicted of domestic violence.
  • Those who have been convicted of some stalking-related crimes.
  • Fugitives from justice.
  • Most people who have a protection order against them.
  • Those who unlawfully use controlled substances, including those with medicinal marijuana cards.
  • Those who have been adjudicated mentally ill.
  • Those who are in the country illegally.
  • Those who have been acquitted of a crime by reason of insanity.

With that in mind, it’s important to review Nevada gun laws before heading to the range so that you can ensure you are compliant.

How Old Do You Have To Be To Go to a Shooting Range?

In Nevada, you must be at least 18 years of age to possess and shoot a firearm without the supervision of your parents. If you are under 18, you can lawfully possess and shoot a firearm under the direct supervision of your parent or guardian.

Each range has different minimum age requirements. For example, The Range 702 allows children who are 10 or older to use our range, as long as they are accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. If you will be the individual renting the firearm, you must be at least 18 years old and have a valid photo ID.

What Should I Wear to a Shooting Range?

Safety is always a priority when visiting a shooting range. Here’s what we recommend:

  • Closed-toe shoes: Flip-flops and sandals are not ideal, as hot brass could land on your feet and burn you.
  • No tank tops: T-shirts or high-necked shirts are best, as they can prevent hot brass from falling inside your clothes.
  • Comfortable shorts or pants: Wear something you can comfortably and safely move around in.
  • Ear and eye protection: These items are also provided by the range and are available for rent or purchase.

Avoid low-cut tops and dangling jewelry as well. Clothing that is excessively loose or baggy can also be risky. If you’re visiting a shooting range in Las Vegas, lightweight clothing will help you stay cool and comfortable.

How Much Does It Cost To Go to a Shooting Range?

Prices vary, depending on whether you’re bringing your own firearm or renting one. If you are bringing your own firearm and ammunition, you’ll only have to cover the cost of renting a lane. If you are purchasing a shooting experience, costs start at $79.95. Costs increase if you buy additional ammunition or rent multiple firearms.

The Range 702 offers themed packages that include everything you need to have a blast at our range. Bundles offer the best value, while simple options like the One and Done are most affordable.

Can Pregnant Women Go to a Shooting Range?

It’s generally not recommended for pregnant women to shoot firearms. The loud noise and recoil of firearms could pose risks to the mother and the fetus. Exposure to lead particles may also pose health risks.

However, some ranges do not specifically prohibit pregnant women from using the facilities. If you or one of your guests is pregnant, consult with a licensed medical provider. The Range 702 does not allow pregnant people to use the indoor range.

Can You Rent Guns at a Shooting Range?

Yes, most commercial ranges offer firearm rentals. At a shooting range in Las Vegas, you’ll find one of the widest selections in the country. Rental options typically include pistols, revolvers, rifles, shotguns, and even fully automatic machine guns. Top ranges also offer rare or exotic firearms for rent.

When you rent a range’s weapon, your fee will usually include everything you need, such as targets, ammunition, and safety gear. A staff member will walk you through how to handle each firearm safely.

Are Shooting Ranges Safe?

Yes, shooting ranges are safe when proper rules are followed. Reputable ranges have strict guidelines, professional staff, and trained range safety officers monitoring the lanes. Before shooting, you’ll receive a safety briefing that covers:

  • Basic firearm handling
  • Range commands and signals
  • Proper use of safety gear
  • Emergency protocols

Following the rules ensures the shooting environment is as safe as possible. Indoor ranges like The Range 702 are designed with the latest safety equipment to further minimize the risk of hazards.

Do I Need Experience Before Visiting a Shooting Range?

No, you don’t need experience to visit a shooting range in Las Vegas. A reputable range has skilled instructors who can review shooting safety basics with you before taking you onto the range with live ammunition.

If you would like to receive specific training, book a class instead of a shooting experience. Experiences are designed for you to shoot exotic or unique firearms. Classes, on the other hand, are focused on education and training so that you can learn about safety, proper shooting techniques, and other skills.

What Types of Firearms Can I Shoot in Las Vegas?

While the 1986 Firearm Owners’ Protection Act (FOPA) placed major restrictions on owning fully automatic weapons, you can legally rent and fire machine guns at certain Las Vegas ranges. You may also be able to shoot the following:

  • Semi-automatic pistols
  • Revolvers
  • Pump-action or tactical shotguns
  • Semi-automatic rifles
  • Fully automatic machine guns

Specialty firearms, such as sniper rifles or historical guns, are also available. All of this variety is what makes shooting ranges in Las Vegas a top attraction for visitors.

Do I Need To Bring My Own Ammunition?

If you are bringing your own firearm, you can generally bring your own ammunition, too. Just make sure that the type and caliber of ammunition are permitted at that range. Most indoor ranges do not allow armor piercing, steel core, or tracer rounds. There may be additional restrictions, be sure to check with the range you’re going to if you’re using anything other than lead core full metal jacket ammo.

If you are renting firearms from the range, the range will usually provide ammunition or require that you purchase new, factory sealed ammunition. They do this to protect their firearms from unintentional damage caused by hand loaded or otherwise unknown ammunition.

Can I Bring My Own Firearm to the Range?

Yes, most ranges allow you to bring your own firearms. Before taking your firearm to the range, make sure it is unloaded, safely cased, and in compliance with local laws. The range safety officer may ask to inspect your ammunition if you are bringing your own.

Bringing your own firearm can save money, especially if you plan to go shooting frequently. Practicing with your own handgun can be particularly important if you intend to obtain your concealed carry permit and carry a firearm on your person.

How Loud Are Shooting Ranges?

Shooting ranges can be extremely loud. Firearms typically produce noise levels of 140 decibels or more, which can cause hearing damage without protection. That’s why every shooter and spectator must wear ear protection.

Indoor ranges, including The Range 702, provide ear muffs or earplugs to every guest. Some ranges charge an additional fee for ear protection, The Range 702 does not.

You can also bring your own ear protection. However, occasional or first-time shooters may not view this as a worthwhile investment.

What Safety Gear Is Required?

Every shooter and spectator who is in the shooting area must wear eye and ear protection. Some ranges also have strictly enforced dress codes. Others are less stringent regarding what you wear and how you dress.

Make sure to review the range dress code rules before heading over. You don’t want to be denied access to the range simply because you are wearing the wrong shoes or apparel.

How Long Does a Typical Shooting Range Session Last?

A standard lane rental may last 30 minutes to an hour. Shooting packages are often designed to take a similar amount of time. Bundles that include multiple firearms may take two hours or more. If you are heading to a Las Vegas shooting range as part of a group tour, you might spend at least 90 minutes from check-in to finish.

If you schedule private lessons or reserve a VIP range for a group, you can expect to spend three hours or more at the range. Classes, such as the CCW permit class, last four to eight hours.

Can I Take Photos or Videos at the Range?

Yes, most ranges allow photography and video recording, especially in Las Vegas, where shooting experiences are part of the tourist attraction. Staff may even help capture the moment for you.

However, safety is always the top priority. With that in mind, make sure to speak to the range staff about taking photos or videos. If you are interested in a photo op with a rare or exotic firearm, the range staff will ensure it is clear of any ammunition and pointed in a safe direction.

What’s Included in a Shooting Package?

At The Range 702, shooting packages typically include:

  • Rental of one or more firearms
  • Ammunition
  • Safety equipment
  • Lane time and instruction from trained staff
  • Targets

You may also be able to add more firearms or additional ammunition to your package.

Do Shooting Ranges Offer Training Classes?

Yes, many ranges provide beginner classes, concealed carry permit courses, or private instruction. Explore a facility’s training classes to learn more about what types of programs they offer and identify which options are a good fit for your goals as a shooter.
