The M249 SAW, or Squad Automatic Weapon, is the American version of the FN Minimi light machine gun. It is a (relatively) light weight, gas operated fully automatic weapon chambered in 5.56mm NATO capable of firing up to 850 rounds per minute. While primarily belt-fed, the M249 SAW is unique in that it was designed to also accept standard NATO 5.56mm rifle magazines, which made it much more versatile in combat situations. Versatility is one of this machine gun’s strengths, as it also comes standard with a top picatinny rail for optics, and various handguards, shoulder stocks, and barrel lengths were produced for different missions and operating environments. The configuration pictured below is a Paratrooper setup, with a collapsible stock and short barrel – much easier to jump out of a plane with!
